About the French Bulldog Breed

The English bulldogs are the breed considered as ancestors of the French bulldogs. They could have been brought to France by the English lace workers established in Normandy . While English bulldogs are stocky and heavy set, their French counterparts are said to be on the lighter side of things, but with highly similar characteristics as the English ones. Some of their owners call them “Frenchies”.

Colors And Markings

The French bulldog is muscular, has compact a body and a short, smooth coat. The colors of their coats can be numerous, but only some combinations are acceptable in most shows. Only the red or fawn dogs may have masks. The masks on other colors are excluded by any kennel organization. Brindle and pied are the most encountered colors or markings among these dogs. Cream or butterscotch are shading the main colors. Colors like solid black (with no other lighter colored hairs), liver, black and tan and black and white, are diqualified in shows..

Health And Temperament

One may say that the French bulldogs are healthy animals. They can be prone to dog type of hemophilia and conditions related to the thyroid. Some of the dogs of the French bulldog breed have their faces too flat, and this condition is called the Brachycephalic syndrome. This condition leads to the dog having a cleft palate or a soft palate. Because the cleft palate condition is practically impossible to correct, these dogs must be euthanized. The soft palate often results to dogs that are prone to passing out after just a bout of moderate exercise or labored breathing even without exercise. This condition can be hazardous to the dogs and stressful to the owners especially if not diagnosed earlier. The dogs of the French bulldog breed can also develop eye problems and spinal or back conditions. Most of the French bulldog females need veterinarian supervison and cesarean section when they are giving birth. This is because the puppies of the French bulldogs have large heads and they may have some difficulty pas sing through the birth canal of their mothers’. And the owners are pricing more the puppies having big heads, so this veterinarian procedure is often encountered in most of the breeders facilities.

The temperament of the French bull dog is very good for a companion dog and a lap dog. They can be best described as attached to their human owner to a very extensive degree and they are also found to be relatively happy and content dogs. They may be exuberant some times , so they should be monitored when playing with children. They do not fit outdoors or in warm or hot places, because of the breathing problems they encounter. The flat face is also accompanied by their tendency to overweight. This is the main reason why they do not need to be exercised for a long time and can do with just one walk daily. You should allow them to rest sometimes when on the walk. They are most likely to have some difficulty traversing through water since they are built to have heavier tops or fore bodies than their backs. They are also dogs that cannot swim.

Due to its terrier linage, the French bulldogs can be sometimes agrressive. And this is the reason you should be careful when approaching a French bulldog that does not know you.

The French bulldog is a fairly recent breed of dogs. Brindle and pied are common colors on these dogs. Care should be exercised when approaching a strange French bulldog.
