What could cause an English Bulldog to smell?
I have a 1.5 year old English Bulldog. She is 50lbs and has a great coat, somewhat dry skin, and I keep her folds clean. She is bather once a month and takes oral flea meds.
How necessary is oatmeal shampoo for the bullie coat? Suggestions on food? Could the smell that she has developed simply be from age, or could it be from infection or dry skin?
STINKY!
It is not the coat, but your dogs digestive system causing the awful smell. That is problem the worst thing about bulldogs: they tend to smell and it's hard to get rid of the smell! It is a common thing in bulldogs. Giving her baths or using different shampoos won't help because the smell is not coming from her coat. Try laying off on any eggs, cheese, hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, sugary treats (switch to all natural). If I were you, it'd stick strictly to only dry dog food and healthy dog treats—nothing else!

Is the smell coming from her skin? You could check if it is coming from her rear as she could need her anal glands expressed. That causes a pretty bad smell! The smell is probably not related to age. Older dogs do get a "old dog smell" but that is years away for her.
My food suggestions are;
Orijen
Innova
Wellness
Solid Gold

Could be diet-related, it could be a skin condition, or she could need her anal glands expressed. If he skin is dry and flaky, it's quite possible she has a skin infection of some sort that is causing the odor. I would see what your vet thinks the source of the odor might be.

We have a 5 1/2 year old female Bulldog that doesn't stink. I am thinking that your girl may need her anal glands expressed. We have to have this done at the Vet with our dog about every 3 months or so. When she starts "butt dancing", in to the Vet we go. Also, are you sure that the smell isn't coming from her ears. She may have ear mites or a yeast infection.
