In order to gain an even greater appreciation of veterinary science it is important to know what veterinary science is and the demanding process involved in attaining a veterinary science degree.

    What Is Veterinary Science

Veterinary science can be defined as the medical field that focuses on the care of animals. This care includes preventative measures to insure the health of animals, determining illness and providing medical care. In addition, especially in the light of bird flu, veterinary science studies and takes action regarding those diseases that can cross from animals to human beings.

Veterinary science has also become very specialized. These specialized fields within veterinary science include oncology, dermatology, emergency care, cardiology, etc. In addition to specific medical disciplines there are opportunities for the individual to specialize in caring for specific animal species. An example of one such specific area of animal care could be a specialization in the care of horses or being an equine veterinarian. Each of these specialties within veterinary science has served to increase the quality of medical care for animals.

In addition, within the scope of veterinary science, there has been an important trend in realizing the delicate balance between human kind and the animal kingdom. The response of veterinary science to this delicate balance has been the emphasis on Zoological medicine. This specific discipline concentrates on wildlife conservation and focuses on the preservation of the various at-risk species.

Completion Of A Veterinary Science Degree

An individual who successfully completes their veterinary science program is known as a veterinarian. As with all medical professions, the completion of a veterinary science degree is an involved process. That process is a combination of extensive educational obligations and practical on the job training experiences.

Upon completion of college, the individual must accomplish three to four of undergraduate pre-veterinary work. Following the successful completion of this requirement, the veterinarian, in process, must continue their veterinarian education by attending a certified veterinarian school. The length of this schooling is four years. Upon successful completion of this formal education the graduate may take their licensing examination.
